FreeScientology Incident Running Procedure – STEP-UP – [R3RX-FS]

The acronym for this new procedure for enhanced engram running is:
Spiritual Trauma Erasure Procedure for Unlimited Processing (STEP-UP)

“STEP-UP” is for FreeScientology running of any incidents, engrams and engram chains.
[FS = FreeScientology - R3RX-FS is the full, expanded version – X = expanded]
[Engram = Traumatic Incident]
[NED = New Era Dianetics, which uses technique R3RA to run trauma incidents]
[SG = Scott Gordon - ("Watchful Navigator") - FreeScientology Technical Optimization Project]

Information:

1) R3R and R3RA (NED), which have long been the workhorse engram-running techniques developed in Scientology, were said to be a great advancement over the early days of Dianetics, but neither ever incorporated the effort processing techniques of 1951 (Advanced Dianetics).

2) It was decided in 1978 (when NED was issued and NOTs was being piloted) that Clears must not run engrams. The reasoning for this was never given in Hubbard’s writings. Yet for at least the previous dozen years, R3R engram running had been done on Dianetics Clears and Scientology Clears without restriction and with no evidence of any special difficulties. Ken (“The Pilot”) Ogger came to speculate that any such problem would in all probability have been the "Move..." commands that might activate circuitry ("entities" – and/or “old identities”) remaining on the case of a Clear.

3) An apt criticism of Dianetics procedure was leveled by Alan Walter - original Class VIII and the leading Mission Holder in Scientology history – that it essentially "moved" a person “through” the incident – as if the being were smaller than it – rather than moving the incident “around” the person. (Think about that one for a bit...) In other words, that the "Move to..." command was a sort of invalidation for a spiritual being who instead could itself recreate and view all dimensions of a past incident, while remaining located in any present-time space.

4) In his solo engram-running technique that he labeled "Time-breaking," Founding Dianeticist Dennis Stephens also chose to bring the incident in question to the space of the person in its full dimensional clarity, leaving ones eyes open and anchoring the solo auditor to the Havingness of the room in present time. This makes possible solo engram running without “doping off” (to sleep) – the original excuse given as to why solo engram running was supposedly “impossible.” In a film LRH wrote the script for, a severely injured athlete in a hospital bed reads the book, “Dianetics: Evolution of a Science” - and then runs the engram out with no previous experience or outside help, healing himself completely. This completely contradicts accepted tradition (after all those years of campaigning against “self-auditing”!). And almost no one noticed.

5) “Lightning-fast” procedures like NED, which aim for rapid clearing, sometimes can be seen to out-pace the reality and Havingness of the person, leaving doubts as to whether these whole track, “space opera” incidents might have only been imagined, or had actually come into view from ones distant past.

This technique seeks to resolve all of the above concerns, while keeping the procedure as simple as possible.

While remaining formal, it nevertheless also restores some of the less formal, but successful techniques lost from the earliest days of Dianetics, when perceptics and effort were considered a vital part of engram-running procedure. It also restores use of a lost concept introduced in 1951 Advanced Dianetics, and rediscovered in 1972 Expanded Dianetics - “Intentions.”

This procedure also means much less chance of trauma being bypassed in running engrams, which could leave force and effort on the case (which, along with the sad fact of Grade III versions not thoroughly handling the ARC break case, may at least partially account for the quantity of case one must handle doing the "New OT levels").
(Ref – C/S Series 6 - HCOB 16 Jun 70 – WHAT THE C/S IS DOING)

This procedure is designed to work equally well on newcomers and Clears. It can be run solo (in which case it is recommended to be done with eyes open). There is no intention to enforce this procedure on Clears or run it without their self-determined decision to run their own engrams and differentiate ones own incidents from mere pictures brought in from other sources, knowing that any such circuits/entities/old identities might also respond to engram-running commands. An incident is something oneself as a being has actually experienced in the past, whether in a present-time or earlier identity.

While it may seem strange to try to run an incident in another identity as your own – for example, a past life as a female, when one can only feel reality on being male in his present body – it is nevertheless important to own it – claim it – take responsibility for it, if it is indeed ones own (the e-meter can be consulted in cases of doubt). In running engrams on a Clear, an easily resolved query one asks before reaching for a correction list (L3RH) is to ask, “Is This Not Your Own Incident?” or simply, “Not Your Incident?”

Even lower-level, introductory clients could run into incidents or chains that are not clear as to ownership, so when incident running gets “unreal” – ownership can also be checked, along with the usual things like over-run of an erasure, or an insufficient run of incidents of a chain such as is done in “lightning-fast” procedures like NED.

STEP-UP with its “Moment of Shock Handling Procedure” runs much more thoroughly, with similar or greater magnitude of gains than traditional techniques. Although it may seem slower to reach back down the timetrack, it does so with far more detail, discharge of the engram, and certainty of erasure. This means less chance of case unreality that may eventually come about for the person who develops doubts that incident-running ever ran “actual events.” It is important to remember that such certainty is a key component in permanent case gain, with the accompanying benefits of increased Havingness and happiness in life, or, in other words, mental stability.

“The basic rule in any case is reality is proportional to the amount of charge removed and so reality can be increased simply by removing charge.” - LRH - HCOB 25 Nov 71-II

What is different about R3R-FS? Besides new commands that replace the “Move through” commands of earlier techniques, the most important enhancement to remember is that you are going to be alternating a run through the entire incident, with a short series of steps which focus on the moments of Shock-Impact-Force-Distress, etc. – all in order to reduce these moments of shock sufficiently to uncover buried emotion, decisions and postulates. This brings back into full use the breakthrough of Advanced Dianetics (1951) working through the Thought-Emotion-Effort sequence in reverse, working back to thoughts and postulates.

The goal of the procedure is to exhaust as much of the effort and emotion from incidents being run, as possible, before returning earlier down the chain. This is a more complete processing of such material. In theory, it should not add much to the time required to go Clear, but should rather present a somewhat higher quality of Clear - a case released of more emotions, efforts and postulates that might otherwise get restimulated by the mechanisms of these postulates buried in unknown emotion and effort.  These remnants could potentially negatively influence a Clear, who, while qualitatively elevated above the “bank” (stored material in the unconscious, reactive mind), still can have such uninspected moments on the track with negative postulates buried in heavy emotion and effort.

Hubbard stated that a Clear still has postulates on the case (such as those handled on False Purpose Rundown).
These postulates remain on the timetrack, so although the case in going Clear has transformed to become remarkably less solid and forceful, it nevertheless contains some lingering concentrations of emotion, effort and force still holding these postulates in place.

It is also very important to note that painful emotion and sensation in reality predate the experience of pain and unconsciousness in a body on the whole track of existence. A person usually goes Dianetic "Clear" on pain and unconsciousness engrams in the “force” bank, and yet can still have uninspected postulates, much painful emotion, and early forms of "light" implanting (trickery, deception and other severe breaks of Affinity, Reality, Communication and Understanding) remaining on their case.

00 - STARTING THE PROCEDURE - Opening Steps

[00] Clear up the exact procedure you will be using in advance (if not already done) using demonstrations as needed. Work with the person to establish an agreement on the procedure you will be using, so that there will be no surprises that could interrupt the session. This applies as much to old-timers as it does to persons new to the procedure, since they will have expectations that need to be resolved to full agreement beforehand.

If not already done as the ordinary “Dianetics C/S-1” use the Dianetics picture book and/or any available Dianetics videos to introduce the basic concepts of Dianetic incident running, and clear up definitions of key words before going on to clear up the entire procedure that you will be using, whether R3R, R3RA (NED), TIR or R3R-FS.

Reminder where applicable:
(NED and Expanded Dianetics – Left Side OCA)
"In doing R3RA [NED] it is necessary that (a) one chooses things the (person) is interested in and (b) one does not force a (person) to run things he is protesting being run on."
(NED Series 6RA – HCOB 26 Jun 78RA – II – ROUTINE 3RA – ENGRAM RUNNING BY CHAINS)

[Note that "interest" is never checked when running a service facsimile or any harmful or evil intention, or drugs on a drug rundown.]

0 - Engram-Locating Commands:

F2 – LOCATE AN INCIDENT OF YOUR CAUSING ANOTHER TO HAVE THE INTENTION ___
F0 – LOCATE AN INCIDENT OF YOU CAUSING YOURSELF TO HAVE THE INTENTION ___

1 – FOCUS COMMAND (USE THE APPROPRIATE COMMAND FROM ABOVE THAT FITS) – As the most usual example, if you are using Dianetics Narrative for a single, particular incident, use the following command:

[1-N] – RETURN TO THE TIME YOU ___ AND TELL ME WHEN YOU ARE THERE

-or- [1] – LOCATE AN INCIDENT OF ___ (statement of somatic or “using” service facsimile)
[NED] – LOCATE A TIME WHEN YOU HAD ___ (exact somatic, feeling, etc.)

2 - TIME TRACK & DATING

[2a] - WHEN WAS IT?
[If the person appears confused or gives too much of a generality and needs more prompting:
"Tell me as much as you can about the time for that incident." – SG]

*[2b] [Advanced auditing, only: Dating can be done on the meter to discharge a heavy, deeply buried incident – see Date/Locate Bulletins for this – do not do this in any other routine Dianetics or NED auditing]

"You may close your eyes if you like" (solo auditors should run this technique eyes-open)

3 – RETRIEVING THE INCIDENT FROM THE TIME-TRACK

[3] - BRING THAT INCIDENT TO VIEW
(watch that the person has done so)

4 – DURATION OF INCIDENT

[4] - WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THAT INCIDENT?
("This is often the most important step as it allows time and space to enter into the incident and this uncollapses the balled-up time-track" - Alan Walter)

5 – ORIENTING THE PERSON TO THE INCIDENT

[5] - BRING THE BEGINNING OF THAT INCIDENT INTO VIEW, AND TELL ME WHEN YOU HAVE IT

6 – PERCEPTION
(“You May Close Your Eyes” can also go here, if appropriate)
– WHAT DO YOU PERCEIVE?

7 - RUNNING THE ENTIRE INCIDENT

(INSTRUCTION – for the first time through, only – or can be repeated as needed)
[7-0] – (“I’M GOING TO GIVE YOU SOME TIME TO INSPECT EVERY ASPECT OF THAT INCIDENT THAT YOU CAN, FROM ITS BEGINNING TO ITS END, BEFORE YOU TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED”)

[7-1] – NOW RE-EXPERIENCE THAT INCIDENT AS CLOSELY AS YOU CAN, FROM ITS BEGINNING TO ITS END, AND THEN LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THAT

8 – WHILE THE PERSON IS RUNNING THROUGH THE INCIDENT

If the person comments before reaching the end, say, “Okay, Continue…”

9 – WHEN THE PERSON IS FINISHED RUNNING THROUGH THE INCIDENT

[9] – TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED

10 – INSPECTING THE MOMENT OF GREATEST SHOCK, IMPACT, DURESS, etc.
(this step is done each time through, before checking if the incident is erasing, and at minimum a second time before asking for an earlier-similar incident)

[10] - UNLOCKING THE ENGRAM – THE MOMENT OF SHOCK

Background Notes:

This is based on 1951 Advanced Dianetics – "Thought-Emotion-Effort."

There are two additional, intermediate levels to add to "Thought-Emotion-Effort." One of these key targets was used in the earliest applications of the first books on Dianetics - PERCEPTION ("perceptics"). Another key discovery used in Expanded Dianetics, the L's and the FPRD procedure, was INTENTION.

This gives us a scale that we will run in reverse sequence, in order to get to the thought buried in the effort (the key theory of 1951 Dianetics: Advanced Procedures & Axioms).

[FORCE]
EFFORT
[PERCEPTION]
EMOTION
[INTENTION]
THOUGHT

The thought is buried underneath the Force and Effort in the engram. So we want to run each of those six in sequence, on each of the primary "COUNTER-EFFORTS" - this time in order of severity (the worst, first).

- ShOCK
- IMPACT
- FORCE
- THREAT
- CONFUSION
- OVERWHELM
- UPSET
- PAIN
- LOSS
- EFFORT
- DISTRESS
- EMOTION

[Acronym for memorization of the above = ShIFT.COUPLED.E]

Use auditor judgment in selecting the appropriate direction of focus. Note that it is often best to go with the first one (ShOCK) given if it applies, but then to adjudicate from listening to the incident, which descriptor to go with for the next Step [10-2] etc. If in doubt, follow down the above-sequenced list, which follows more or less a gradient scale of force and trauma.

"EFFORT" ties these two groups – external and internal forces - together, as these include all efforts in the engram - counter-efforts (force) and own efforts (to counter the force).

This question can be used for running engrams or heavy upsets (or also anytime one comes across an implant or heavy ARCx in auditing and is not already running a Dianetics incident) – as needed:
  • [10Q] - "Is There any Moment of Shock, Impact or Severe Distress?

If the answer is Yes, establish which fits best, and run a full Step 10 process on it.

[10Q-1] - “Is There a Moment of __(test selected item)___?
(can also be used as needed, to establish which fits best if it is not already obvious to you, the auditor)

So as a procedure, step 10 will run like this:

[10-00] - "Bring the Moment of Greatest [ShOCK] Into View and Tell Me When You Have It"
(next time use "[IMPACT]" as [10-2] and so on, down the list)

[10-1] - "Now Bring That Moment of Greatest [ShOCK] Into Full View Around You and Contact… (next time through the incident use another like "[IMPACT]" as [10-2] and so on, down the list, although in some cases you can run the same wording again to get more out of it)
  • [10-1a] – the FORCE Involved" (or “Inflicted”)
  • [10-1b] – the FORCE Being Directed at You"
  • [10-1c] – Your Own EFFORTS"
  • [10-1d] – Your PERCEPTIONS"
(if the person isn’t already describing for you what he/she is finding, you can use a prompt to get the person to say what is coming up: “What Did You Get There?” or “What Were You Able to Find?”)
  • [10-1e] – any EMOTIONS"
  • [10-1f] – Your Own INTENTIONS"
  • [10-1g] – Your Own THOUGHTS"  (“What Did You Get There?” or “What Were You Able to Find?”)
  • [10-1h] - any DECISIONS or POSTULATES You Might Have Made"
  • (“What Did You Get There?” or “What Were You Able to Find?”)
[SG – note down any postulates and their reads and watch for a blowdown to a floating needle – but do not confuse the postulates that come up here with “Postulate Off Equals Erasure” - since the incident may not be the basic on the chain, and there can be many postulates in one incident or even in one moment of it]

[now you may continue on to Step A below]

  • [optional - advanced - mainly for implant running - but run where it fits]
  • [10-A] - any AESTHETICS or SYMBOLS Being Used"

  • [optional – when it seems appropriate] (from LRH lecture mentioned in passing)
  • [10-F] - WHAT FORCE IN THAT INCIDENT COULD YOU CONFRONT?

  • [recommended - when it seems appropriate] (from late-50’s Scientology incident running)
  • [10-R] - WHAT PART OF THAT INCIDENT COULD YOU BE RESPONSIBLE FOR?

If this is the first time through the first incident, go on to Steps A-B-C for at least one more time through.  (This conforms with original R3R procedure and NED Narrative, where more than one pass through the incident is expected. It gives us a second opportunity to reduce the moments of Shock and Impact using Step 10. Only if the Tone Arm has gone significantly higher since where you first started the incident you are running, would you ask if there is an earlier-similar incident. Often one finds the Tone Arm blowing back down on this Moment of Shock procedure and if so, stay with it.)

The following letters A-B-C/D-E-F/G-H-Eye are given to match the corresponding steps for New Era Dianetics. (Note that A-B-C are used for the 2nd run through any incident, and D-E-F are used for the 3rd and any subsequent runs through the incident. In R3R-FS the wordings of ABC are not different from DEF.)

[A] [D] – BRING THE BEGINNING OF THAT INCIDENT INTO FULL VIEW AROUND YOU, AND TELL ME WHEN YOU HAVE IT

[B] [E] – NOW RE-EXPERIENCE THAT INCIDENT AS CLOSELY AS YOU CAN, FROM ITS BEGINNING TO ITS END, AND THEN LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THAT

[C] [F] – TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED

[C+] [F+] – RUN ANY FURTHER MOMENTS OF SHOCK, IMPACT, etc. – (Steps a-h)
(then come back to check on the progress of the incident in Step C-a or Step F-a)

[C-a] [F-a] – CHECKING ON PROGRESS OF INCIDENT

[C-a] [F-a] – IS THAT INCIDENT ERASING OR GOING MORE SOLID?
(After the second time through, if it is "going more solid" - or if on the e-meter, the tone arm has risen, check for an earlier beginning, and if none, then check earlier-similar incident [ES] – and if none, go back to Steps DEF+ – this version favors Narrative, for its thoroughness – thus checking for “Earlier Beginning” [EB] first.)

[G] – “IS THERE AN EARLIER INCIDENT WHEN YOU HAD A ___?”
- or -
[G-N] – “IS THERE AN EARLIER-SIMILAR INCIDENT?” (for Narrative)
- or -
[G-ES] – IS THERE AN EARLIER INCIDENT WHEN YOU USED/CAUSED ___?
(in the blank use exact same service facsimile or harmful intention being run)

[H-0] - WHAT LED UP TO THIS INCIDENT?
(which may prompt a look which uncovers an earlier beginning) and/or
[H-1] - IS THERE AN EARLIER BEGINNING TO THIS INCIDENT?
- or -
[H-2] - DOES THE ONE WE ARE RUNNING START EARLIER?
- or -
[H-3] - DOES THERE SEEM TO BE AN EARLIER STARTING POINT FOR THIS INCIDENT?

11 – CHECKING FOR ERASURE

"When it appears that you have reached the basic incident of the chain and that it is erasing, after each pass through, ask:"
(NED Series 6)

[11] – HAS IT ERASED?

"When the (person) has stated that it has erased, the auditor should also expect a cognition volunteered by the (person). The auditor should expect to see very good indicators (VGIs)."
(NED Series 6RA – HCOB 26 Jun 78RA – II – ROUTINE 3RA – ENGRAM RUNNING BY CHAINS)

12 – CHECKING FOR POSTULATE(S) MADE

"If no postulate made during the time of the incident has come off and been volunteered by the pc, ask:
(NED Series 6RA – HCOB 26 Jun 78RA – II – ROUTINE 3RA – ENGRAM RUNNING BY CHAINS)

[12] – DID YOU MAKE A POSTULATE AT THE TIME OF THAT INCIDENT?"

[Note here that running the Thought-Emotion-Effort scale as done above in Step 10, will uncover -many- postulates, and the auditor should be aware of this, and prompt the person to review these, if having already uncovered the key postulate somewhere along the line earlier in the session is suspected - SG]

***END OF PROCEDURE***

------------------------------------------------------------------------
APPENDIX 1: Command Sheet R3R-FS-0:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
R3R-FS-0 - Free-Scientology - Level 0 Dianetics – (Simplified, Short-Form, Listen-Style)
(may be run at any level – ref: HCOB 3 Apr 66 – DIANETIC AUDITING COURSE)
[Step 4 derived from 1951 Advanced Dianetics Procedure]

-Any Alcohol Within the Last 24 Hours? (Wait another day – give the person only a Locational)
-Any Medications or Drugs Within the Past Week? (Note these down. At auditor discretion, a session may begin after agreement is made to directly address the reasons for drugs or medications as the first session, and to discontinue – as needed with medical support – any further alcohol or drug use or medications before starting general auditing.)

(This command would be used in place of Step 0a if auditing over medication or recent drug use)
“Tell Me About the (Medication/Drug/Alcohol) You Took Recently” (“Thank You”)
(then)
0d. “Locate the Most Recent Incident You Can Find That Prompted You to Use ___”
(“All Right” – then begin with Steps 1-3, repeated so long as the incident is progressing along well)

Comfortable? Room Okay? Tired? Hungry? Any Reason Not to Start?
“Start of Session”

0. “We are going to find an incident in your life of which you have an exact record. Then by sending you through it at the moment it happened several times we’re going to erase it.”
“Any Questions?” (handle, if so)

0a. “Locate an Incident You Can Comfortably Face” (“All Right”)

1. “Bring the Beginning of That Incident Into Full View Around You and Tell Me When You Have It” (“Okay”)

(first time only) “When Was It?” (“Okay”)

“You May Close Your Eyes to Help Stay Focused, if You Want” (“Okay”)

(first time only) “What Do You Perceive?” (“Okay”)

2. “Now Re-Experience That Incident as Closely as You Can, From Its Beginning to Its End. You May if You Like, Say What is Happening as You Go Along.” (prompt, as needed, with “Okay, Continue…” until the person reaches the end, then acknowledge with “All Right”)

If the person decided to run the incident silently:
2a. “Tell Me What Happened” (then acknowledge with “All Right”)

3. “Bring the Moment of Greatest Impact Into Full View Around You and Contact:
[3a] the Force Involved” (“Okay”)
[3b] Your Own Effort” (“Okay”)
[3c] Your Perceptions” (“Okay”)
[3d] any Emotions” (“Okay”)
[3e] Your Own Intentions and Thoughts” (“Okay”)

Do Steps 1-3 a second time through, before asking:
“Is That Incident Getting Lighter? - Or Is It Getting More Solid?” (if lighter, or if in doubt, and the person seems to be making progress, go to Step 4 again and then back through Steps 1-3 again)

(if more solid, or the incident is “grinding,” and no new data is coming to light)
0b. “Does There Seem to Be an Earlier Starting Point to This Incident?”
1. “Bring That Earlier Beginning of This Incident Into View and Tell Me When You Have It”

(if the answer is still “more solid,” or it’s unchanging, and no new data is coming to light)
0c. “Is There an Earlier, Similar Incident to the One We Have Been Running?”
(if No, then continue again through Steps 1-3; if Yes, than continue Steps 1-3 on new incident)

(continue with Steps 1-3 as long as you are making progress – if progress slows, check again for “Earlier Beginning?” as above, first – and then check, “Earlier-Similar?” as above)

When the person is cheerful or has said something did change (a realization from running the incident) and is doing better, you can, if you have time, go back to Step 0a and find another incident to work with.

Work on the incident until you have reduced or erased the negative mental charge from it. If there is any trouble progressing after several times through, and the person can find no earlier-similar incident to run, you should talk this over as something that might better be taken up at a future time, after getting some rest and further study. When it is time to end the session, tell the person:

“We Are Going to Be Ending the Session Soon”

“Find Something Comfortably Real” (acknowledge answers and repeat command a few times until the person appears cheerful and in present time)

“Anything You Would Like to Say Before We End This Session?”
(note what is said and acknowledge)

“End of Session”
